31st Jan. 2007

10.30am : Plane that supposed to take off on 10am has finally take off.

11.15am :

Arrive safely at Siam Reap International Airport. Local time of Siam Reap is one hour late compare with time in KL.

Upon arriving, we took some pictures and head to the immigration counter to check in. As Malaysian no need to apply Visa to enter Cambodia, we skip the counter where foreigner apply e-visa.

The immigration counter is slow. We have spent the time for about 20 minutes to wait in the queue.

When we are done, we walked to claim our luggage and look for the hotel people who carries our names. Found the person and we on board to a car and go to hotel.

We discovered something different on the cars, motors or tuk-tuk...Not all of them have number plates?!?! According to the driver, their country is now regulate people to register for number plates on their cars.

12noon : We arrived at Angkor Star hotel and check-in for rooms.

1.15pm :

After taking some rest, we went out to search for domestic packages offers at travel agencies along the street.

There are a few tuk-tuks stopped at outside of the hotel and for finding customers. They will call you and offer you he can drive you to places that we want to go. We reject them, and one of them will say: I wait for you at here, later you come back. So keen on getting every business.

We found a travel agency named Asia View Tour Tour Network which is located just opposite from the hotel. We managed to close the deal with USD 60 per person for a group of three person tour.It is a customised tour from the standard package. The package includes a tour guide and transport in air-cond vehicle for three days.

2pm :

In the afternoon, tuk-tuk driver or the travel agency will usually give advise to tourist to visit Tonle Sap lake for sunset view and visit the water village. But we are not interested and from the tour guide book that we have, it doesn't look interesting to us. Hence, we decided to walk to tourist government office to get local guide books.

Along the walk, the sand is soft like those at beach. The air is dusty, this is because when the vehicle passed by, the wind will bring the soft dust to the air. We have to use hands or mask to cover our nose and mouth to avoid the dirty dust.

Along the road, we passed by the oldest hotel - Grand D' Angkor Hotel. We saw a silk fair is setting up just beside the tourist government office. We first enter the government office, the compound in the office is not properly maintained, it's rocky path. The officer passed us a guide book, we asked for two more but he said the guide book that he has already finished given out. They only published once in every 3 months. And by that time we were there, it's the end of the third month, so it's difficult to get more. Nevermind, we carry on to stroll around the silk fair. Saw two funny animals hanging on the tree made creatively :)

3pm :

We walk back to see how far we have to walk to the downtown - old market. Well, luckily it is not far away from our hotel. It's about 15 minutes walk. There are a lot of shop houses along the road, so we never get bored while walking to the old market.

5pm : It's a hot sunny afternoon. We stroll around the old market until about 5pm. We are very hungry ( we do not have lunch when we arrived) We choose a restaurant named Khmer Kitchen which I got to know this from an online tourist information, and it is commented as a not bad restaurant. We have ordered the Khmer local food:Lok Lak, Amok Fish, and recommend by the waiter: Khmer Curry Pork, Fried Pumpkin with Tofu. Drinks: 3 Angkor Beer. It all cost for USD 11.60.

7pm :

We walk back to our hotel to rest early before tomorrow's adventure day starts.

The hotel's tv has lots of tv programmes from around the world. I even found TV3! We watched the whole nite of tv programmes before sleep.

1st Feb. 2007

6.30am : Wake up to prepare ourselves.

7am : Went down to the hotel's hall to have breakfast. The weather is cool!

8.30am :

Meet up with our arranged tour guide and we start our journey.

Before enter Angkor Wat tourism place, we have to pass by the plaza toll to buy or show our tickets. As it is the first day of our visits. We went to queue with a passport photo and USD 40 per person for a 3-days ticket passes.

After ticket checked, we start getting near to Angkor Wat temple - a Hinduism temple. We saw the river, it's nice and comfortable view.

9am :

We get down from the car. The tour guide explained to us the whole Angkor Wat temple is built with sand stones carried down from a mountain named Phnom Kulen with elephants as transport.

We then proceed to the entrance, walk pass the causeway and it leads to a entry tower. We saw bullet marks left on the wall, these was left during the war between khmer rouge and the government. We can see the entry tower has some carvings. Most of them are apsara dancers carvings.

After explore the entry tower, we walk again and pass by two libraries (left and right) of this temple mountain. One library is restored by a French company and the other is restored by a Japan company. There's a lotus pond on our left when we are still walking on the causeway. That's the best spot to have photograph of Angkor Wat.

After finishing walking on the causeway, we enter and explore the most extraordinary bas-reliefs, depicting stories and characters from Hindu mythology and the historical wars of Suryavarman II. The carvings on the wall is very beautiful although some are becoming blur as time goes by. Each bas-relief is a story: Battle of Kuru, the historical march of the army of Suryavarman II against the Cham, Scenes of Heaven and Hell, and Churning of the Ocean Milk. Besides of the wall, there are other carvings on pillars, staircase..it is like anywhere it has space, they will have carving sculpted on the architecture. It takes some time to explore the bas-reliefs.

We then climbed up to the temple moutain that is about 64 or 65 meters high. It is quite difficult to climb up as the staircase is steep and small. And of course there are a lot of carvings everywhere too. From the top, you can see the Angkor Wat structure, and you may also see some buddha statue. Climbing down from the top is difficult to. We follow others to a staircase that is with handrail. It is a long queue.

We walk out from Angkor Wat and pass by a tourist market.

12noon : Go to Borey Sovann restaurant to have lunch. This time we ordered Spicy Mango with Salmon (it is actually a salad, not very nice), Fried Noodle, Lok-Lak and two coconut. Total cost is USD 14.41. At here, I finally understand why people advice tourist to change some Riel currency, for just in case you need to pay USD 0.41. Most restaurant accept USD and of course in Riel too.

1.40pm : After finished our lunch, we talked to our tour guide about our next trip. This is because tour guide in Cambodia will have about an hour rest in the afternoon. We never thought of this, so he suggest us go back to the hotel which we of course are not willingly to do so. But they are fine to drop us at Angkor Thom (Big Angkor).

2.30pm : We arrived at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, which is often be the first stop on the tour of Angkor Thom. There are two lines of statues holding a "naga" on each site. One side is the god, the other side is monsters.

3pm :

Soon, we arrived at Bayon. It's one of the amazing historical sites in Cambodia too. There are carvings around the exterior wall of Bayon too. It's mainly about Cambodians life in the past.

Our tour guide - Sothean told us a lot about Hinduism and Buddhism stories. We were wonder why did he knows so much of these two religion. We asked and was told, he was a monk for 8 years.

3.30pm :

We head to Baphuon, a huge temple-mountain in the heart of Angkor Thom. It's in ruined condition is most parts, so it is closed for extensive restoration progress.

Actually there's a nicer path to walk to Baphuon, but our tour guide prefer to walk beside the main path. Maybe it is due to he was a monk practise last time.

As we walked further, we went to Royal Palace of Angkor Thom. It is steep to climb too. But there's nothing to see on the top.

Soon, we reached the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of The Leper King (The person in charge in the Hell). The real Leper King statue was moved to musuem and the one we saw is a replica. We also have seen the Hindusim Level on the wall. Nice and obvious carvings still can be seen on the wall.

4.30pm :

It's near the sunset time. We off to Bakheng Hill to watch sunset at Bakheng Temple, it's on the popular spots to view sunset.

It's an easy path to go up the hill. We also see elephant riding service with charge offer to tourists who prefer to enjoy an elephant ride go up to or down from the hill.

When we are on top of Bakheng Temple, there are some people - foreigners or locals looking for good spots to enjoy viewing the sunsets. We found ourselves a place too. I went to find the direction that can see Angkor Wat temple. I found it, but it was too far and hazy to look clearly of Angkor Wat temple.

6pm : Soon, the temple is full of people. Everybody is getting ready for photography shots - professional or casual photographers. The sunset session isn't a pleasant one as it is hazy and it makes the sun becomes blur, not a beautiful sunset. :(

6.30pm : Walking down from Bakheng Hill. It was getting dark, this is the best time to use torch light which we brought it for sunset and sunrise purpose in Siam Reap :)

7pm :

It's dinner time! We went to Yik's suggested restaurant Viroth's at Wat Bo Road for Khmer cuisine.

We have ordered Roast Chicken with Khmer Style $4.5, Chicken Satay $4.50, Amok Fish $4, 3 Cokes with $1 each and in total we have spent $17.50 at this restaurant. It's not bad with 3 persons sharing.

9pm :

After the dinner, we decided to walk to back to the hotel as Siam Reap is a small town. We also wish to enjoy night view around Siam Reap.

Before we arrived at the hotel, we go to Angkor Market to buy some big bottles of mineral waters. This market sells cheaper price of mineral water with $0.30 each 1.5Litre.

10pm : Back to hotel. Bath, chit-chatting and sleep.....zzz....

2nd Feb. 2007

5.30am : Wake up and prepared ourselves for sunrise at Angkor Wat

6am : We are supposed to leave from the hotel to Angkor Wat. But we were waiting for the hotel to prepared packed breakfast to us, have to wait for 10 minutes more.

6.15am :

Took our breakfast and heading to Angkor Wat.

When we reached there, it is early and it is cold in the morning. But there are already a few people standby there to get the frontest position for photography shooting. Everyone is wearing jacket. Saw some chairs available near the lotus pond - where's the best shot of Angkor Wat's sunrise. We of course go to find ourselves a chair to sit. But one of the stall owner there said if you order coffee then you'll have chairs to sit, otherwise you can't. It is too early to have a coffee, not our habit.

There are a lot of professional photographers taking their cool equipment with SLR or DSLR to catch the best shot of Angkor Wat sunrise.

The place has become crowded later, more and more people come here to wait for the beautiful sunrise.

7.30am :

This is the time where we view the beautiful sunrise.

7.50am : After that, we took breakfast at the river bank of Angkor Wat. Locals likes to picnic by the river bank to enjoy the view of Angkor Wat and cozy weather.

8am :

After the sunrise, the tour guide need to take a rest, so we told them to come back when it is 9am and finished rest. We wish to visit the Angkor Wat again.

Bas-reliefs on the exterior wall is what we wish to revisit again. To look more carefully and slowly on the carving arts.

9am :

It's time to meet our tour guide. He will bring us to Kbal Spean which has carvings on the river bed.

It's a long and bumpy way to Kbal Spean. We were boucing in the car. Along the way, we saw houses developed at the city's outskirt. The houses that are near to the city is huge and nice. Tour guide told us it is because they sell the land in Siam Reap town, earned huge amount, so they build a better house. Further from the town, we see small houses - it's actually a hut with leaves covered and wood that built it. We also saw pig strolling along the street, what a funny scene you couldn't find in my own country.

10.15am :

Arrived at Kbal Spean, at the starting point to climb up to the mountain.

We showed our tickets bought at the entrance and start going up. It becomes a hot morning after the sun is out.

At initial stage, the path is easy. Then, we have to go through rocky and steep path. Luckily we were wearing sports shoes. Must bring water with you if you are visiting Kbal Spean. It is a more than half and hour mountain hiking.

We started to think why the king wants to do carving on a river bed of the mountain.

11am : Finally we are here. We walk along the river and listen to the stories told from the tour guide. We see many big and huge rocks too. The river's water is very clean.

11.45am : We started going down from the mountain.

12.15pm : Going to have lunch at a restaurant near Bantaey Srey.

1pm :

We went to have a lunch at Prasat Banteay Srey Restaurant. It is very near to Banteay Srey. I started not feeling well after visiting the Kbal Spean.

We have ordered Khmer cuisine - Prahoc Kratis (I don't like the fish paste taste), Amok chicken in Coconut, Beef Lok-Lak, 2 coconut juice and 1 ice coffee. The meal costs $12

2pm : After finish the meal, we walked across the street to visit Bantaey Srey - a citidel of the women. It's a small temple and the temple is built with pink sandstone, but what I see it's red in colour.Probably the colour has changed after so many years.

3pm : We left Banteay Srey to Banteay Samre. Its architecture looks similar with Angkor Wat. Nothing to see at here, carvings are blured and there's not many people visiting this historical sites. It used to have funeral ceremony here. Somehow, I feel this place is scary.

3.40pm : We go to Pre Rup. It's a temple built with bricks instead of sandstones.

5pm : We head to Bantay Kdei, passed by a Srah Seang big water pond. The temple is nice and similar style of Ta Prohm.

6pm : We are backed to hotel to have a rest before going to a dinner show - Apsara Dance Dinner Show.

7pm :

Arrived at Angkor Mondial Restaurant. It has many people sitting and everyone is busy taking food from the tables. It's a buffet dinner. They offer the Amok fish in small square leave, taste very nice! The dinner show cost $ 10, but it does not include any drinks. You can ask for warm or cold plain water. Some stuff won't show you happy face if you just ask for plain water.

The show starts from 7.30pm and ends at about 9.30pm. At the end of the show, you can go up to the stage and have photos with the dancers.

10pm : We went for foot massage - Asian Massage, costs $5. The service are fine, we were surprised to know the boss knows how to speak in Mandarin. He told us he learnt from the customers. Wow!

11pm : Buy some mineral waters and Angkor Market. Back to hotel and have a good night sleep.

3rd Feb. 2006

7.30am : Wake up and have breakfast.

8.30am : This is the last day of the tour. We are going to finish our desired destination today. First, we head to Prasat Kravan - a unique temple consists of bas-reliefs of Vishnu and Lakshimi rendered in brick. The place is not huge, but the sculpture is nice.

9.30am : Finally we are at Ta Prohm - the best tree-in-temple. The tree is huge and big. It crawls into the building. We were told not to simply going anywhere. It is easy to get lost in the building. Our tour guide almost lead us the wrong way to exit :D

11am : Arrived at Takeo - a temple mountain dedicated to Shiva. My friend fell down when she is almost reached the last steps. Luckily she is fine. Every temples that has stairs are steep. So do keep in mind to be careful when climbing up or down from the temple-mountain. Travel safely is always the most important note in mind.

11.30am : We left Takeo and heading to Preah Khan. This temple is built and dedicated to the King Jayavarman VII's father. This temple had a two stories of libraries, unfortunately the wooden stairs has burnt. And today, we only can see its structure.

12.30pm Go to Neak Pean - A small island temple. It's cozy here as there are a lot of surrounding the area.

12.45pm : Next destination - East Mebon. We only stop by to take the sculpture fo the elephant, nothing much special here.

1.15pm : Going to town to have lunch. Today, we would to have lunch at the Blue Pumpkin. The lunch is not good. Food rates are just so so. Maybe drinks or ice-cream is nice. You can chill-out here in the hot afternoon or if you want to hook up on the Internet. The shop offers free Wifi facilities.

3pm : Meet our tour guide again and we continue our journey.

3.30pm :

We back to Bayon. We are have not fully explore the Bayon since the first tour guide keep telling us about buddism stories. So, we make a request to our tour guide, and he is flexible and willing to bring us there.

At Angkor, two buildings made me impressed - Angkor Wat and Bayon. These are the ones that still consider "complete"and most interesting as compare the others

5pm : We arrived at the Angkor Wat again to view the sunset. It is the last time in this trip to visit Angkor Wat. We feel relax sitting at the stairs of the libraries building to enjoy the sunset view.

6pm : Going to have full body massage today. We get the service from the massage center named Seeing Hand. They are blinds and the fees will be donated to them. They are good and friendly too.

7.30pm : Dinner time. We went for Cambodia BBQ restaurant. We order two persons' meal and 3 cokes, that just costs only $10. It's the cheapest meal we have so far in this trip.

8.30pm : Walk to the central market to buy souvenirs. It's cheaper to buy souvenirs at central market than the old market.

10pm : Walk back to the hotel and pack our stuffs. And, zzz....

4th Feb. 2007

7.30am : Wake up and have breakfast.

8.30am : Stayed at the room. Nothing much we can do. Waiting for taxi to pick us to the airport.

9.15am : Check-out and on board to a booked taxi.

10.45am : Arrive at the airport. Proceed to the departure hall and check-in.

11am : While waiting for the plane at the waiting hall. We stroll around the shops nearby. Reading some books...etc...

11.20am : On board to the flight. Wow, the flight arrived early..hahaha... Not long later, it starts to take off.

2.30pm :

Home sweet home to my home country - Malaysia. :) It's a wonderful and memorable trip.

Don't be scared to go to Cambodia, it is safe from land mines. Unless, you are to challenge yourself to meet one.
